Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time to hit the beach! While we humans enjoy the sun, sand, and surf, our furry family members can also have a great time. However, taking your pet to the beach requires careful preparation to ensure their safety and well-being.

Here are some essential dos and don’ts to keep in mind for a fun and safe beach outing with your pet.

Note: This guide is primarily intended for dogs, as they are more commonly taken to the beach and generally enjoy the experience. While some adventurous cats might tolerate a beach outing, it’s not ideal for most. Cats can be more sensitive to the loud noises, unfamiliar environment, and potential hazards present at the beach. If you do decide to bring your cat, ensure they are comfortable with travel and outdoor adventures, and always keep them secure in a carrier or on a harness to prevent escape.

The Do's

1. Do Check Beach Regulations

Before heading out, make sure the beach you plan to visit allows pets. Some beaches have specific hours or designated areas for pets, so it's important to know the rules to avoid fines or being asked to leave.

2. Do Bring Plenty of Fresh Water

Pets can get dehydrated quickly, especially in the hot sun. Bring a portable water bowl and plenty of fresh water. Encourage your pet to drink regularly to prevent overheating and dehydration.

3. Do Provide Shade

Beach umbrellas or pop-up tents are great for creating a shaded area where your pet can rest and cool down. Pets can suffer from heatstroke if exposed to the sun for too long, so make sure they have a shaded retreat.

Also, don't forget that the sun can make beach sand extremely hot! If the sand feels hot to the back of your hand, it's too hot for paws. Protect your pup's paws by going during cooler times of the day (like in the early morning or evening) or by having them wear booties.

4. Do Use Pet-Safe Sunscreen

Just like humans, pets can get sunburned, especially those with short hair, light-colored fur, or exposed skin. Use a pet-safe sunscreen on their nose, ears, and any other exposed areas to protect them from harmful UV rays.

5. Do Keep a Close Eye on Your Pet

The beach is full of new sights, smells, and sounds, which can be overwhelming for pets. Keep a close eye on your pet at all times to ensure they don’t wander off, get into fights with other animals, or ingest something harmful. And definitely do keep your eye on them at all times.

6. Do Rinse Off After Swimming

Saltwater and sand can irritate your pet’s skin and coat. After swimming, rinse your pet thoroughly with fresh water to remove any salt, sand, and potential contaminants.

7. Do Bring Waste Bags

Always clean up after your pet. Bring plenty of waste bags and dispose of them properly. Keeping the beach clean is essential for everyone’s enjoyment and safety.

The Don’ts

1. Don’t Leave Your Pet in the Car

Even for a short time, leaving your pet in a parked car can be extremely dangerous.

Cars can heat up quickly, leading to heatstroke or even death.

Always take your pet with you or leave them at home if they can’t join you at the beach.

2. Don’t Allow Your Pet to Drink Lake (or Ocean) Water

Drinking lake water or salty ocean water can make your pet sick for a variety of reasons, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Ensure your pet has access to plenty of fresh water and discourage them from drinking from the lake or ocean.

3. Don’t Overexert Your Pet

Running and playing on the beach is fun, but it can be exhausting, especially in the heat. Watch for signs of fatigue or overheating, such as heavy panting, drooling, or lethargy, and be sure your pet is taking plenty of shady breaks to cool down and rest.

Dogs cannot tolerate the heat as well as we can. If you are hot, your dog is likely hotter.

4. Don’t Forget About Beach Hazards

Be mindful of potential hazards such as sharp shells, broken glass, jellyfish, and strong currents. These can all pose risks to your pet’s safety. Keep them away from dangerous areas and supervise their swimming closely. Make sure your dog is wearing a life jacket when swimming or boating.

5. Don’t Ignore Signs of Distress

If your pet shows signs of distress, such as difficulty breathing, excessive panting, vomiting, or unusual behavior, seek shade immediately and offer water. If symptoms persist, contact a veterinarian right away.

6. Don’t Assume All Dogs Are Natural Swimmers

Not all dogs are comfortable in the water. Introduce your pet to the water gradually and ensure they are confident swimmers before allowing them to venture too far. Consider using a pet life jacket for added safety.

One Last Do: Enjoy Your Day at the Beach!

Taking your pet to the beach can be a wonderful experience for both of you, as long as you are prepared and mindful of their needs. By following these dos and don’ts, you can ensure a safe, fun, and memorable beach day with your furry family member.

Always prioritize their safety and comfort, and you’ll both enjoy a fantastic day by the sea. Happy beaching!
